I’ll never forget the day of the royal engagement.
I’d just stepped into work at a parenting site when news broke that Prince William had asked his longtime girlfriend, Kate Middleton, for her hand in marriage. Pandemonium broke out. We scrambled to create as many keyword-stuffed blog posts about the engagement as possible in hopes of tricking Google. We published everything from “An Engagement Party Fit for a Prince: Prince William and Kate Middleton That Is” to “5 Delicious Chocolate Desserts to Celebrate the Royal Engagement of Prince William.” It worked. Two dozen blog posts later, Google had sent us a record flood of traffic.
This was in November 2010, and a lot has changed since then. Google has heavily adjusted its algorithm to favor high-quality content. Flooding search engines with mediocre, keyword-laden content simply won’t work anymore.
As SEO legend Rand Fishkin told me, “The vast vast majority of links and shares and amplification signals of all kinds are going to only the top five or 10 percent of content that gets put out. There’s not a whole lot of value in writing a decent blog post anymore.”
