Watch the Hilarious Friskies Cats Win the Super Bowl
In Animal Planet’s annual Puppy Bowl, kittens are relegated to being cheerleaders on the sidelines, but in Purina Friskies’ new Super Bowl commercial, they’re the stars of the show.
You’ve probably seen Purina and BuzzFeed’s collaborations before; it’s been the most consistently viral series of branded content for nearly a year and a half, ever since it premiered with “A Cat’s Guide to Taking Care of Your Human,” voiced by BuzzFeed Motion Pictures’ president, Ze Frank. Nearly all of the 10+ videos in the series have received over a million views, resulting in over 50 million views in total. Now, the series is coming to primetime in BuzzFeed’s first-ever commercial produced for television.
“Dear Kitten: Regarding the Big Game” features the series’ seasoned cat schooling the new kitten in the house about what exactly goes down when these humans infiltrate their home and scream at the light-box. According to Adweek, the 60-second TV spot will air in three regional “cat-themed” markets during the big game on February 1. However, in true digital publisher fashion, BuzzFeed uploaded an extended version of the ad below.
An accompanying video was also uploaded to the Purina Friskies YouTube channel. Tune in to learn how the humans were evaporated by a ray gun, leaving a giant pile of body-less coats on the bed.
The success of “Dear Kitten” and its jump to television screens is more than just a confirmation that people love to watch cat videos. It’s also a major milestone for content marketing that could see more brands partnering with digital publishers to create TV commercials.
“I’m sure it will happen in the future. Ideas will be incubated, data-driven online, and then it will move into campaigns we’ll see on air during the Big Game or other on-air events,” BuzzFeed Motion Pictures’ vice president, Jonathan Perelman, told Adweek. “[Publishing online] is a way to build an audience, and you can simply move that into a different format, say, television.”
So watch out, puppies of the Puppy Bowl. Brands are catching on to what the Internet wants (cats), and they’re bringing it to TV.
