Infographic: What Marketers Need to Know About Google RankBrain

Ever wonder what’s behind Google’s search results? While the company is notoriously tight-lipped about its secret sauce, it has recently spilled some information about a key ingredient.

It’s called Google RankBrain, an artificial intelligence system that handles ambiguous and never-before-seen search queries. If that still sounds kind of vague that’s because, well, it is.

To help, Digital Marketing Philippines took the information already available and made a handy infographic with the eight most important facts about Google RankBrain.

For instance, RankBrain handles just about 15 percent of the 3 billion search queries that come through each day. As Bloomberg reported, “If RankBrain sees a word or phrase it isn’t familiar with, the machine can make a guess as to what words or phrases might have a similar meaning and filter the result accordingly.”

The algorithm also learns offline by testing and proving predictions based on historical searches. If the predictions are good, then the algorithm updates the next time it’s active. As for effectiveness, Google revealed that RankBrain is smarter than the company’s engineers. In a head-to-head test, the system scored 80 percent while the engineers came in at just 70 percent. Take that, humans.
