Content Sutra Podcast, Episode 1: What Happens When Facebook Takes Over?

Last fall, the late David Carr wrote: “For publishers, Facebook is a bit like that big dog galloping toward you in the park. More often than not, it’s hard to tell whether he wants to play with you or eat you.”

A year later, Carr’s analogy has never been truer for publishers, marketers, and even politicians. The past few months have brought a hailstorm of Facebook news: Instant Articles are exploding while publisher engagement plummets, and brand reach has declined while Facebook’s ad offerings have never been better—even Ben Carson is throwing most of his money into the great savior of mobile advertising. Simultaneously, Facebook Messenger has plans to upend e-commerce as we know it, and M, Facebook’s virtual assistant, may just leave Siri in the dust.

For our first Content Sutra podcast, Contently co-founder and best-selling author Shane Snow and I went deep on all things Facebook, examining the present and future of the social network and how it will impact the future of media, marketing, and politics. Joining us is Contently’s resident Facebook expert, associate editor Dillon Baker. You can listen via the embed below or download the podcast on iTunes.
