2012 Trend: Branded Apps Are Out, Content Is In

Julia Hutchison, COO of the Association of Publishing Agencies, thinks branded apps are a thing of the past. It will be original and thoughtful content, she told InPublishing, that will take its place in 2012.

She elaborates:

“The last few years have seen the emphasis on brands building apps to engage with users via smartphones…. However, many brands appear to be realizing that for day to day engagement with consumers they can’t beat content: a beautifully crafted website or print publication is the perfect vehicle for attracting and keeping customers.”

It’s definitely an interesting point. Apps have quietly become a smaller market as companies realize the importance of content, not just its medium. But we’re wondering — will big brands let their apps go? What do you think? Let us know in the comments.
