DMN 40Under40 Winner: Joe Coleman, CEO, Contently

This year’s group of DMN 40Under40 winners have a few things in common. Well yes, they’re under 40. Also they have a proven track record of marketing excellence and leadership, whether they’re in roles supporting global brands, or leading their own thriving start-ups. Over the next few weeks, you’ll get to know our winners, and what they’ve accomplished.

Joe Coleman is the CEO of Contently, a content marketing platform.

What has been your proudest career accomplishment to date?

I’ve been really fortunate to grow and develop a best-in-class team at Contently. We started off with a mission to build a better media world through the power of storytelling. Since we started back in January 2011, we’re helped brands engage, educate, and build relationships with their audiences. On top of that, I’m so proud of the culture we have at Contently, and that’s a testament to the team that really gives their best day after day. An experienced executive once told me that what they found striking about Contently is that everyone here is genuinely well-intentioned. It’s something people can feel immediately, and it’s certainly something I’m very proud of.

What’s the best piece of advice you can give to future 40Under40 honorees?

It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day or to focus only on the quick, exciting wins. You should have an eye out for those to help keep momentum going, but you also have to think about the longevity of your business and what your team can accomplish. No matter where you sit, building something genuinely special is a marathon, not a sprint.

What do you hope to accomplish in the next five years?

I work with a really passionate, driven, hard-working team, and we have our sights set really high. We plan to completely change the way organizations build relationships with their audiences in a digital world. We’ve learned a lot over the last five years, working with top-notch brands like Whirlpool, IBM, and JP Morgan Chase. That’s also what’s really fun about these big, ambitious goals we have. There’s a sense that we’re in this with our customers and we learn from them as much as they learn from us.

What is one interesting fact about you that few people know?

I lived in Las Vegas for a number of years back in the early-mid 2000s, and may or may not have starred in a real estate reality show with special appearances by our cofounder, Shane Snow. It’s legendary in the office, even though I’ll never let it see the light of day. What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.
