The Sr. Manager of Talent & Editorial Services manages a team of high-performing content-production experts who are building and optimizing our 100,000+ network of freelance creatives (our “crown jewel”), plus a group of 50 closely held freelance managing editors who partner with in-house teams to service clients. 

This is a pivotal hire for Contently. We are looking for a rockstar who has been a journalist or content expert with a deep passion for the craft and experience building large teams of writers, editors, photographers, etc. Through a combination of people management and freelancer service, and with the support of our Customer Success and User Growth teams, you’ll ensure that freelancers provide customers high-impact content that helps them achieve their business objectives. 

Who you are:

  • 2-3 years experience managing 2 or more internal direct reports 
  • 5+ years working in an editorial capacity in journalism, content marketing, or a related field, with the passion and empathy to match
  • Business savvy and revenue-focus with an appetite for data-driven decision-making 
  • An experienced editorial eye — ability to judge quality of editorial deliverables 
  • Sense of humor
  • Customer-facing polish
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with detail-oriented execution, able to collaborate but also work autonomously once a plan is set
  • Experience managing a remote workforce is a plus
  • Must love dogs

What you'll do:

Talent Network Management 

  • Develop/refine vision and strategy for Contently’s freelancer network of 160,000+ creatives 
  • Lead team efforts to improve the freelancer experience across the user journey, from sign-up to cash-out
  • Advocate for freelancers internally, including during product development process, while balancing their needs against larger business and client objectives 
  • Work cross-functionally with Customer Experience teams, Product Management, Marketing and Finance teams on freelancer-centric initiatives 
  • Oversee the development and execution of freelancer trainings, communications, policies and enforcement protocols that promote quality executions and top-notch service
  • Use data to develop network intelligence that informs strategic planning and goals
  • Establish pricing guidelines for client content commissions 
  • Track, monitor and take steps to increase revenue stemming from freelancer activities on-platform
  • Proactively communicate with network to disseminate critical information as well as build community and encourage desired behaviors
  • Manage and grow content offerings with an eye toward diversification into high-growth and revenue-generating areas like video and designed and interactive media
  • Refine systems that support freelance resource allocation to ensure efficient, cost-effective scaling and project staffing

Talent and Editorial Services team management

  • Define, measure, and report on employee performance, goals, and progress
  • Promote and model ownership for results; responsible for instilling accountability
  • Establish performance management systems to measure and reinforce desired activities and behaviors
  • Provide analysis of team performance against department/ division objectives 
  • Prepare job descriptions and role expectations; establishes promotion and progression guidelines
  • Coach others to manage conflict and sensitive situations

Manage the Editorial Service

  • Train, hire, staff, and manage closely held network of freelance managing editors 
  • Vet editor candidates and monitor editor bandwidth; hire as needed
  • Scope custom editor engagements 
  • Assess client needs and pair with editor based on expertise, availability, and strengths/weaknesses 
  • Partner with internal services teams to hone the managing editor’s role across the customer lifecycle; keep abreast of evolving approach to client service 
  • Develop and enforce policies, trainings, and communications that promote autonomy and client-centric service from editors 
  • Deliver feedback to editors at scale programmatically while coaching them 1:1
  • Oversee multimedia arm of the editorial service: photo, video, design, and art direction
  • Maintain dedicated editorial resource site (editor HQ)
  • Manage calendar of communications to keep editors engaged and informed 
  • Oversee systems that support scalable program infrastructure: onboarding, billing, problem-reporting 
  • Advocate for editors internally while balancing customer needs and wider business objectives 
  • Own client success and satisfaction re: editorial service 
  • Serve as point of escalation for editorial matters 
  • Manage Content on Demand offering
