Paywalls, Deconstructed

Hey Everyone!

At least 150 paywalls have popped up over the last year or so, but many publications are not sure about putting in their own.

For the New York Times, it seems to be paying off. PaidContent announced today that NYTimes.com has signed up a lot more customers in less time than its UK namesake, The Times.  They have 324,000 paid digital subscribers (and assumedly made somewhere between $4.86 million to $11.34 million so far).

If The New York Times spun off its digital edition, it would be the tenth biggest paper in the country by circulation. So should other major publications, even without the NYtimes power just give paywall strategy a try. Or should they stick to free, and try to build up a larger following that way?
