Microsoft Social Network Targets Students

Microsoft last week opened so.cl, its new social networking site that focuses on socializing and search, to all users.

Pronounced “social,” so.cl can be accessed through a Facebook or Windows Live account. Users can connect with people who share similar interests as them, start video parties, and share search inquiries.

According to PCWorld, the site is “not positioned to replace existing full-featured search and social networking tools.”

Microsoft is aiming the site at students who want to share information with one another. Wired quotes the company as saying so.cl is being used to explore “the possibilities of social search for the purpose of learning.”

When users search for topics they’re interested in, information from other people on the site shows up.

So.cl is similar to the new technology being used by Bing, which earlier this month introduced social media results.
