Dave Brown Wins #ContentlyAwards Community Manager of the Year! @etsy @holidaymatinee @thisismkg

Perhaps no profession grew to prominence in 2011 as much as the now ubiquitous role of Community Manager. Part marketing, part customer service, part publisher, community managers rule the Twittersphere and can make or break a brand publishing operation.

We had a large number of excellent nominations for the honor of Best Community Manager, from Domino’s’ Phil Lozen to Mashable’s Meghan Peters. Yet, of the nominees, the votes cast by our independent judging panel were nearly unanimous: The title of Best Community Manager of 2011 goes to Etsy’s Social Media Specialist, Dave Brown! Though Brown recently left Etsy, his work in 2011 – and Etsy’s – is recognized in this award. Brown now works at the marketing agency MKG.

This Brooklyn-based record label owner and social surfer has helped the handmade goods marketplace startup, Etsy, grow to 1.5 million Twitter followers. That’s 5x the followers Foursquare has, 20,000 more than the hit TV show Gossip Girl, and 1/5 of Twitter’s own follower count! Brown’s job is to coordinate his company’s various social initiatives, run campaigns and events, and generally be awesome.

Well, Mr. Brown, voters say you’re just that. Congratulations!
